Moore Stephens – growing accountants worldwide
A career as a Chartered Accountant will make you one of the most sought after, high earning professionals in the world. The CA (SA) qualification is versatile and well recognized, leaving you with many rewarding options.
There is a current shortage of Chartered Accountants in South Africa so there is plenty of opportunity for hard working and ambitious graduates.
In addition to the academic requirements needed to become a CA, candidates need a natural curiosity about a wide range of businesses and a variety of people, good verbal and written communication skills are also essential as well as a willingness to work hard.
School subjects required to become a CA:
Matriculation exemption with an above average pass in Maths is required, as well as one of the following Qualifications:
B Comm (Accounting) or equivalent
AND
B Comm Honours (Accounting) or equivalent
OR
B Accounting (which includes both the undergraduate and post graduate qualifications)
What happens if you don’t have the specified tertiary qualifications or if you cant afford to study full time?
You can apply for a training contract with a firm of Chartered Accountants or Auditors and study part time.
The term of your training contract will depend on your highest qualification. In other words, if your highest qualification is Matric, or a non-accredited National diploma, you will be on a five-year training contract. If your highest qualification is an accredited National diploma, BTech degree or a non-accredited BComm degree you will be on a four year contract. (For more information visit www.saica.co.za)
What happens after you have obtained your qualification?
Upon completion of your qualification you commence a training contract with a firm of Chartered Accountants or Auditors (TIPP Training).
This three year contract enables you to learn, make mistakes and develop under supervision in the real world of business.

The term CA (Chartered Accountant) (SA) is the title of members of SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountancy).
Chartered accountants work in all fields of business and finance. Some are involved with public practice work whilst others work in the private sector or are employed by government departments.
Chartered Accountancy is a challenging career involving trade, industry and economic growth. Chartered accountants also offer professional services as accountants and management accountants. Rapid changes taking place in South Africa’s economy have opened up vast opportunities for chartered accountants to engage in many diverse businesses and industries.
Career Options:
Work in a professional accounting firm which includes the following areas of specialisation:
Auditing – as part of a supervised team of accountants and trainee accountants you will be required to check the accuracy of the records of organisations to ensure that the financial statements fairly present the results of the business.
Tax – Accountants who specialize in tax are responsible for completion of tax returns and tax consulting for clients.
Management Advisory Services – Accountants who specialize in this field analyze and advise their clients on all the many financial aspects of running a business.
Secretarial and Accounting Services – The secretarial section involves a variety of tasks such as the registration of companies, the preparation of agendas and minutes for meetings and related legal matters.
Accounting services would include the design of accounting systems, the capture and recoding of data and the preparation of financial statements.
Work in commerce and industry:
Some CA’s leave the profession once they are qualified to pursue careers in business. A company CA (SA) is usually a member of the top management team.

Vacation programmeCome and join us over the holidays for our 2 week vacation programmes!
Our vac programme will give you the chance to experience our culture and business approach. You will meet our dynamic team who will give you the opportunity to work on various parts of the business. At the end of your 2 weeks, you will have a very good sense of how we approach our client work, one another and also, what we love doing for fun!
We will include you in our training programme and give you ample opportunity to ask lots of questions as well as contribute your ideas.
The vac programme gives you a real chance to check us out and it’s great for us to get to know you too. Many students have been hired based on their involvement and participation in our vac programmes.

Becoming a CA...Minimum qualifications required:
- BCom Accounting or,
- Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting or,
- BAcc (4 year degree) or,
- BCom Hons (Financial Accounting)

Careers – Bursaries
Moore Stephens offers a limited study bursary programme. The bursaries cover university fees, excluding books and residence costs.
To be considered you would need to:
- Be a resident of South Africa
- In possession of a matriculation exemption certificate with full exemption and a sub minimum of an "A" for 4 subjects, 1 of which must be "Core Mathematics"
- Be registered for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at an approved university
- Maintain a 60% average at university for all subjects
- Be a self-confident achiever, and
- Have held various leadership positions
After completing your studies at university we look forward to welcoming you to our team of audit clerks, where you will eventually qualify as a Chartered Accountant (SA).
